We’ve moved into Space4 about 2 years ago now and we couldn’t be any happier. It’s not just because it is closer to home, but because we share a set of values that are important to us. We want to surround ourselves with people who want to make the world a better place.
Space4 is a community of people dedicated to making the world a fairer place, and to create a supportive working environment. The space is supported by CoTech, a UK-wide network of worker co-operatives in the digital tech sector. We have some of these co-ops working here, including AR designers Animorph, web developers Go Free Range, and open data specialists Open Data Services. We also have small charities, freelancers and small businesses, most of whom are using technology (to greater or lesser degrees!) to support their social aims.
Every Wednesday we eat lunch together in the space. This is an opportunity for people to get to know each other, swap ideas, share skills and invite others in. Users of the space are actively encouraged to participate in lunches and evening events, and even to host their own. Users are also invited to join our governance committee, which decides on future strategies for Space4. For users who aren’t in a position to pay the full price for a desk, we ask them to volunteer instead to help making the space function.
So we’ve made a little video about the space and the coop behind it. Watch it and if you like what you see, come and see us!
